Complementary Medicines Regulations to be Challenged in High Court this week.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week Anthony Rees, Chairman of the TNHA, will be representing the Alliance of Natural Health Products South Africa (“ANHPSA”) before the Gauteng North High Court.

Anthony Rees – TNHA Chairman

This case places under judicial review contentious and inappropriate Complementary Medicine Regulations first gazetted in 2013 and further expanded as recently as 2017 by the Minister of Health, under direction of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).  According to many businesses and practitioners in the natural health product sector, the said regulations threaten the public’s continued access and variety of demonstrably safe natural health products used for health and wellness, many of which have become popular and trusted household brands for decades.

The case will be held by video conferencing due to current Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The case will be heard by Judge Elizabeth Mamoloko Kubushi.

Representing the ANHPSA are Adv. David Borgström SC , and Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) legal representatives Yana Van Leeve and Imraan Abdullah.

Below is a Media Statement by the ANHPSA on the basis of their case.

The TNHA will keep you abreast of developments in this case.
